Cairns : Your Perfect Winter Whale Watching Escape

Cairns Getaway

With lower humidity and average temperatures ranging from 18 – 26°C, winter is the ideal season to escape to Cairns and go see some of Queensland’s incredible marine life.

From June through August, Cairns is at its most pleasant, with dry clear skies, warm weather, and calm winds. This provides perfect conditions to enjoy some of it’s most scenic offerings on the water, and most notably, the opportunity to witness migrating humpback whales.

The Great Barrier Reef forms a breeding sanctuary for whales and dolphins, with 35% of the world’s total living population calling the Reef home. Between July and September around 2,000 humpback whales migrate from Antarctic waters to Cairns to give birth and nurse their calves.

Restrictions now allow charters of 20 passengers to go out on the water, just in time for some incredible opportunities to spot and interact with these majestic creatures. Being one of twenty aboard a large vessel, that usually houses numbers into the hundreds is the ultimate way to whale watch in the utmost intimacy, comfort and luxury.

Cairns itself has plenty of on-land offerings that will excite and delight your party including it’s breathtaking walking trails, waterfalls, and coastal views from the Daintree Rainforest, as well as abundant shopping and foodie offerings.

With the sun out, minimal chances of rain, and Covid-19 restrictions easing on a rapid basis – now is the time to get in touch and be notified of our current seasonal packages and specials. Charters are booking up quickly, but there is still plenty of availability – contact our friendly team to talk about your ideal winter escape to Cairns and secure this exclusive experience.
